What Are the Degree Requirements for a Master’s in Business Management?

a close-up of a book

If you are looking into your masters in business management, you’ll need to know what the requirements are to get into the program and what the requirements are to graduate from the program. The following list may vary from one university to the next, but these are the basic requirements you will find regardless of where you choose to attend. If you are already working in business management and looking for ways to advance your career, furthering your educating is a great step to take.

They are a lot of MBA programs, both in-person and online, to fit the needs of working students. Assuming you already have your undergraduate degree, an MBA degree will allow you to choose coursework in a specialization within business management. For example, you can specialize in entrepreneurship, business administration, human resource management, or international business. Here are the requirements if you are interested in getting a master’s degree in business management.

Bachelor’s Degree

First and foremost, to get into a master’s program, you need to have already earned your bachelor’s degree from an accredited university. You will need to provide proof of your degree with a transcript. If it has been a while since you attended undergraduate, your prospective graduate school can request a copy of your transcript directly, so you don’t need to figure out how to get one.

Your undergraduate degree does not need to be in business. However, have an undergraduate degree in business will help you at the graduate level if you have no work experience. If you get your MBA after years of working in business, you should be okay in terms of the knowledge expected at the graduate level.

GRE/GMAT or Approved Replacement

You will need to have taken and passed the GRE or GMAT test. If you did not take it, you would need to provide proof that you completed graduate-level classes equally at least six credit hours, have a professional certification or licensure in a relevant field, have over three years of relevant and advanced work in the field, or have an undergraduate degree from a domestic AACSB accredited institution with a GPA of 3.5 or higher.

These are examples of exceptions provided for the GRE/GMAT requirement. You will need to contact the graduate school you are planning to attend to see their specific options. While submitting GRE or GMAT scores may seem like the easy option, many people are not great at taking standardized tests, so the alternatives open up graduate studies to all people.

Application

You will need to fill out an application for the graduate program. Every university has its own application process, so you will need to contact an admissions counselor at the university you want to attend. You may also find the application and specific requirements on the university website.

The application will need to be submitted online, and the school’s admissions counselor can work with you to ensure you get everything submitted that you need. The admissions counselor can also help you get set up with financial aid if needed or payments.

38 Credit Hours

Once in the graduate program, you will need to complete 38 graduate credit hours in a combination of required and elective classes within the graduate program. The elective classes that will be available to you will vary based on the university you are attending. You should be able to find a list of possible classes on the school’s website. The elective options will be important to the specialization you have chosen, as you want to chose classes that will help you further your career. You can also choose classes with great personal interest.
